How Often Should You Get a Massage?

If you wanted the neatest possible answer to this question, it would be every four weeks.

Unfortunately, bodies do not run on calendar reminders.

Some people love having a massage every month. Some come every couple of weeks for a while and then space things out. Others book three times a year when they suddenly realise their shoulders have migrated towards their ears.

All of those can be reasonable.

The quick answer

There is no single correct massage frequency for everybody.

For general relaxation and wellbeing, many people enjoy a monthly appointment because it is easy to remember and fits naturally into a routine. But that is a practical pattern, not a medical rule.

How often makes sense depends on why you book, how your body feels between appointments, how much you enjoy massage and what fits your budget.

Do I need a massage every month?

No.

Monthly massage is popular because it creates a regular bit of time that is already protected in the diary. If you know that one hour every month helps you switch off and you genuinely look forward to it, that is a perfectly good reason to keep doing it. For some clients, the value is simply not waiting until they feel completely wound up again before making time to look after themselves.

But I am not going to tell somebody who feels great after six weeks that they have somehow missed their treatment window.

Massage is allowed to fit around your life rather than becoming another chore.

What if my shoulders feel tight again after two weeks?

That is useful information.

You might decide that a shorter gap suits you better, or that a shorter focused appointment between longer massages is enough.

It is also worth asking what is repeatedly loading the same area. Long desk days, training, driving, sleep, stress and repetitive work do not disappear because you had one massage.

If a problem is persistent, worsening, neurological, follows an injury or simply does not behave like ordinary muscular tension, more frequent massage is not automatically the answer.

Is more massage always better?

Definitely not.

The goal is not to collect massages.

If you are booking so often that you feel constantly tender, you are not enjoying it, or you are doing it because you think you are supposed to, I would question what we are trying to achieve.

Regular massage should feel useful or enjoyable enough to justify the time and money you are spending on it.

Does the type of massage change the frequency?

It can.

A relaxing Swedish Massage can sit quite easily in somebody’s regular routine. A stronger or more stimulating treatment may be something you personally prefer to space differently.

Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage & Wood Therapy Massage is often booked for a different reason again, including body-sculpting or contouring goals around a particular event or period.

The treatment matters, but your response to it matters more than somebody else’s calendar.

What about massage if I train regularly?

Being active does not automatically mean you need more massage.

Some people who train frequently enjoy massage as part of their recovery routine. Others would rather spend the same time sleeping, eating properly or doing absolutely nothing.

If massage helps you feel good and fits your training, great. If it becomes something you feel obliged to squeeze in because ‘recovery’ sounds productive, that is less convincing.

What if I mainly book to relax?

Then frequency can be gloriously uncomplicated.

Book when having that protected hour is valuable to you.

For some people that is every month. For somebody else it might be every six weeks, before a busy period, or simply when they realise they have not properly switched off for a while.

Relaxation is a valid reason to book. You do not need to invent a shoulder problem to justify it.

Does NOVO Therapy offer regular massage options?

Yes. NOVO Therapy has packages and monthly membership options for clients who already know they like having massage in the diary.

I see those as a convenience and value option, not a prescription.

If regular massage suits you, they can make sense. If you prefer to book as and when you fancy it, keep doing that.

So how often should I book?

Start with the reason you are booking.

If this is your first massage, have one and see what you actually think before planning your next six.

If you already know you love regular massage, choose a rhythm that fits your body, diary and budget.

And if every four weeks happens to suit you perfectly, brilliant.

Just know that you chose it. The massage calendar did not choose it for you.
